About Us
Building Consent Approvals Ltd (BCAL) became the first truly independent accredited building consent authority in New Zealand. After working closely with IANZ and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) from 2023, BCAL was registered by on the 26th of June 2025.
Assessing and approving building consent authorities is managed on a public register by MBIE, refer to this link – (BCA) Register | Building Performance
Registration of any BCA is based on very strict criteria including satisfying strict civil liability requirements specified under section 192 of the Building Act 2004. BCAL shall work with established clients who also have appropriate civil liability so all parties can have confidence in appropriate cover in case of issues.
The New Zealand Building Act has allowed for independent building consent authorities since 2004, but no one took up the challenging task to achieve this. Consentium was developed and promoted as an independent BCA, but it had limitations only provided consenting services to Kainga Ora as a Crown entity.
Building Consent Approvals has been developed to meet the needs of the building industry with our core focus on efficient and effective building consenting services with KPIs that are created and developed in partnership with our clients. As a result of our core focus we can reduce the costs of compliance and building that impact every house built in New Zealand.
Building Consent Approvals as a BCA has limited itself to working for good, known, and reputable developers and building companies only. The services we will provide to our clients are performed under contract to ensure we meet the needs of our clients, and our clients meet our needs.
